In Memoriam Prof dr Chris de Koster
This Monday (August 5th, 2019) Professor Chris de Koster passed away. Chris was an expert mass spectrometrist. He also acquired a great deal of expert knowledge on chemistry and materials while at DSM. From 2001 Chris worked on proteins and biosystems as Professor of Mass Spectrometry of Biomacromolecules at the University of Amsterdam. Before joining DSM, Chris studied in Utrecht, obtained his PhD in Leiden, and performed scientific research in Utrecht and at AMOLF (Amsterdam).
Wherever Chris worked he left his mark and made many friends in the analytical community, thanks to his broad interest in science and in people. Chris was very sharp and often direct in scientific discussions, but always with a willingness to reconsider any position if good arguments were brought forward. Chris also had an inimitable sense of humour, and some of his famous phrases we will never forget.
Chris was involved in COAST from the beginning. He was principal investigator in a complex TA-COAST research project on portable mass spectrometry, he was a dedicated educator and taught several Saturday courses in the ASTP program each year, until sickness prevented him from inspiring more students with his dynamic, insightful and enthusiastic presentations.
The analytical community will greatly miss Chris de Koster.
